Kobako Bourjois

Kobako Bourjois

Kobako by Bourjois is a Oriental Spicy fragrance for women. Kobako was launched in 1936. The nose behind this fragrance is Ernest Beaux. Top notes are Aldehydes, Cinnamon and Citruses; middle notes are Lily, Jasmine, Iris, Magnolia, Rose and Gardenia; base notes are Civet, Ambergris and Musk.

Kobako EDP available at a price – 4 EUR/ml.

Production was discontinued around 1951, and the fragrance was relaunched in the 1980s. The modern version retains the elegant, complex aroma of spices, white flowers, and musky accords of the original, but has been adapted to modern tastes.

A kobako (香箱) is a box for storing incense used in kodo (香道, “Way of Incense”), a traditional Japanese art that involves the use and appreciation of incense as part of a codified behavior. It can be used to store items needed for games of incense comparison.

It is interesting to note that one of the meanings of the word “box” in the slang of many languages is to refer to female genitalia. As far as I know, the word kōbako in modern Japanese slang also has this meaning. But the smell in question is not animalistic or intimate, which would provoke polar reactions.

Springtime in Paris and Kobako were released in France the same year as in America, but I can find no mention of Mais Oui being sold in France in the 1930s, or that any of these new fragrances were available in Britain or the Dominions before World War II, with the exception of Flamme.
