The fashion brand was founded by Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana in 1985. By the 1990s, they had expanded internationally and began creating accessories and fragrances in addition to their clothing lines.
Dolce & Gabbana launched their first perfumes, Dolce & Gabbana for Women and Dolce & Gabbana Pour Homme, in 1992 and 1994 respectively. These fragrances marked the brand’s entry into the world of perfumery after its expansion since its founding in 1985. Since then, Dolce & Gabbana has introduced a wide range of fragrances, among its popular lines.
The first fragrances received significant recognition: In 1993, Dolce & Gabbana Pour Femme was awarded the 1993 Perfume Academy Award for Best Women’s Fragrance of the Year. In 1996, they received the “Oscar of Perfume” for best men’s perfume from the French Perfume Academy, the first time this title was awarded to an Italian brand.
In the late 1990s, their sales were around $500 million, and in 2003 alone, their revenue reached $633.2 million.
Light Blue – This is one of the brand’s most successful lines, launched in the early 2000s and includes both men’s and women’s versions. The line’s advertising campaigns, often set in Capri, have become iconic.
The One – This collection is known for its glamorous Italian cinema aesthetic, inspired by the 1950s.
The fragrances often draw inspiration from the Italian lifestyle, Mediterranean landscapes, and the designers’ cultural heritage, aiming to be sensual, elegant, and bold.
Since the initial releases, the brand has launched numerous other fragrances, including the newer Dolce Rosa Excelsa in 2016, as well as various niche and luxury lines, such as the Velvet collection.
